Jake Kumamoto earns highest Fitness Honor
The Tierra Linda Middle School Maroon Trunks award was established in 2009. At that time it was an opportunity for all TL students, 6th-8th grade, to set a fitness goal for themselves and have two chances per school year to pass four physical fitness tests. (Fifth graders needed to pass the 6th grade standards). The four tests are a mile run, military style sit ups, push ups, and pull ups. All the standards for the Maroon Trunks are above the California State Physical Fitness Test standards. This challenges all test takers to work on their fitness OUTSIDE of PE, on their own time. Since 2009, it was discussed and decided that the 5th graders should take a year to work on their fitness, practice the tests, then try for the Maroon Trunks as 6th-8th graders. Each grade level standards require more work and dedication to pass, as the standards get progressively more difficult.
The first year a student passes the tests they are given a pair of Maroon Trunks with the logo,” You Dream, You Believe, You Train, You Achieve” printed on the leg. Second year award winners get an embroidered patch to sew onto their maroon shorts, with the words “2nd Year” on it. Third year receives a pair of silver trunks with the logo in maroon.
A few very fit individual students that were 5th graders in 2009, did pass the 6th grade standards and were awarded the Maroon Trunks award. One student, Jake Kumamoto, current 8th grader at TL, was one of those students. He has since continued to pass the test each year. This past December he earned his 4th award. The ONLY Tierra Linda student thus far to achieve that goal. Jake has earned a pair of gold trunks as a 4th year award. Congratulations to Jake Kumamoto and his outstanding achievement in physical fitness.
You can see a list of all award winners since 2009 on the banner hanging in the gym on the Tierra Linda campus. This year’s award winners will be added in the summer.
